Albany chefs Cagan, Sheetz and Joyner with native American in head dress
On Sunday January 3, Albany chefs Noah Sheetz, Nicci Cagan and Rebecca Joyner met at the Crown Plaza in Albany to perform a cooking demonstration at the fifth annual Rock Rattle and Drum Pow Pow. Each chef brought an assortment of locally sourced ingredients that came together in the improvisational making of the “Three Sisters” and pan seared Maple infused venison skewers. As a member of the Rondout Valley Growers Association, Chef Cagan came to the demonstration armed with kale and corn from Davenport Farms and local maple syrup from Lyonsville Sugar Shack. Her raw kale and corn salad was well received by the audience of Pow Wow attendees and participants, many of whom were adorned from head to toe in native American clothing, jewelry, and face paint. As chef Sheetz seared maple soaked venison (which was “harvested” by Rebecca Joyner’s brother), Joyner prepared a stew of “Three Sisters” from local black beans and acorn squash that had been grown by chef Sheetz, and frozen tomatoes from Chef Cagan’s summer garden. The Pow Wow lasted three days and included native American drumming and dancing and several jewelry and clothing merchants.
